Novo mesto, also known as the metropolis of Dolenjska, was founded in 1365, when the Austrian Archduke Rudolf IV granted city rights to the town at the bend of the Krka River. Officially named Rudolsfwerd, it developed as Novo mesto and soon became the administrative, cultural, religious, and business centre of Dolenjska. Novo mesto is located in the heart of the hilly landscape of Dolenjska, embraced by the Krka River. Its abundance of nature, tradition, and culture offers a memorable experience for every visitor. The Krka Valley, just above Novo mesto, is considered by many to be the most beautiful river valley in Slovenia, with gentle banks, picturesque rapids, and natural dams that highlight its character. Notable attractions include numerous mills and castles, which, together with the landscape, appear anachronistic in the present day. You will find your stay in our town enjoyable. You can choose from a variety of viewpoints, pilgrimage trails, sports and other facilities, and forests rich with walking paths, hunting opportunities, wild fruits for picking, and fishing. In the town, you will find numerous monuments, and in the Museum of Dolenjska, an impressive archaeological collection. Novo mesto invites you to visit. If you do, and if you get to know it, you will surely fall in love with it, for there is no town as beautiful, sensual, and desirable as Novo mesto.
